Deeds’ campaign is optimistic that polls are wrong because the pollsters don’t consider those who voted for the first time in 2008 as likely voters.
“We’ve been calling them our sleeping giants,” said Deeds campaign manager Joe Abbey. “They’re not showing up in the polls, but if they show up at the polls on Election Day, then it will be game over.”
Jus' sayin'.
That spin is just one notch better than praying for divine intervention. My local races since November 2008 didn't get much independent polling, but Bulova barely won her race and Moon lost his. I don't believe it was fatigue or complacency, and it certainly wasn't any kind of disenchantment with Obama who hadn't done anything yet, good or bad. Until the types of first-time voters who turned out for Obama believe that voting is a civic responsibility that matters personally, the two major parties will be forced to struggle in between those rare times that larger-than-life candidates emerge.
